Name: Bram Schoemaker
(07)
Internship: European
Union of the Deaf, Brussels,
Belgium
I would like to
introduce myself, my name is Bram Schoemaker and I
was an International student (from the Netherlands)
at Gallaudet University. I have been always interested
in politics, so I decided in my sophomore year that I would declare my two
majors; International Politics and Communication Studies.
I would also like to
tell you about my internship-experience: my internship was at the European
Union of the Deaf in Gent,
Belgium. They
moved a short time ago from Gent to Brussels.
They are a European non-profit organization under European Union; they focus
only on national issues about Deaf and Hard of Hearing people and their rights, relationships between several
national associations for Deaf (like NAD in the US) and other projects. I worked on one project, at General Assembly from
two years ago. The French Deaf association pointed out that there was
awareness about EUD and EUDY (European Union of the Deaf Youth), but what are
the opportunities for seniors (old Deaf people)? I researched surveys and
compiled results from 32 different countries; it was great experience to have
contact with different Deaf associations.
Beside all of that, I don’t have and will never have regret that I chose my
major in International Politics; I will borrow the quote from the
famous advertisement from McDonald’s; “I’m lovin’
it!!!”
