About Me
Dr. Compton-Conley worked in private practice and in a rehabilitation hospital as a clinical audiologist before coming to Gallaudet. She has been employed by Gallaudet University since 1978, where she has held three different positions. For several years she worked as a clinical supervisor in the audiology graduate program. Later, she worked for several years as the Director of Gallaudet's Assistive Devices Center. Since 1998 she has been a faculty member, teaching courses (Acoustic and Instrumentation, Amplification, Assistive Technology, Professional Issues, Fourth Year Externship, Aural Rehabilitation) for the Au.D. Program as well as in the M.S. Speech-Language-Pathology Program.
Currently Dr. Compton-Conley is a principle investigator at Gallaudet's Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on Hearing Enhancement, a national project funded by the United States Department of Education, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) in the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services (OSERS). The objective of her project is to develop an on-line needs assessment tool to assist audiologists and consumers in selecting the most appropriate hearing assistance technologies.
Dr. Compton-Conley has worked actively in the area of assistive technology since 1981, co-founding Gallaudets Assistive Devices Center in 1984. She has published extensively in the area of assistive technology and has presented on the topic at numerous state, national, and international conferences. In 1991 she received the Special Friend of the Hearing Impaired Award from Hearing Loss Association of American for her efforts in promoting the use of assistive technology. In 1992 she received the Joel Wernick Award from the Academy of Dispensing Audiologists for her distinguished contributions to the field of Audiology through the promotion of assistive technology.
Dr. Compton-Conley and her husband, Jeffrey, reside in Annapolis where they spend time sailing the Chesapeake Bay.
