Wind in my hair and bugs in my teeth.
What's the attraction?

The old cliche' about "if you have to ask you wouldn't understand" holds true. There's just something about being one with the bike and the road, the exhilaration of speed without the confines of windows and doors. People who like free falling from airplanes or flying down a mountain on skis also like motorcycling. As a woman, a motorcycle means freedom. Freedom from home, kids and stereotypes. I'm on my own, responsible for no one but myself, guarding my life with reflexes and skill. It can be a meditation, blocking out the world of work and responsibilities for a short time.
I ride every chance I get, even if it's just to the local store. I sometimes ride to work, but commuting takes the fun out of it. The hotheads "battling" their way to work and the giant DC potholes make for a challenging ride so early in the morning.
I'm a member of a motorcycle club called Women On Wheels ©, WOW for short. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month and ride on the third Sunday of the month. If you are interested in more information check out our web page at www.capitolcruisers.org.
A "not to miss" event for me is the annual Mid-Atlantic Womens Motorcycle Rally, MAWMR, held this year June 19 - 21 in Gettysburg, PA.. It is a women's only rally. Men are allowed at the pre-rally party but that is all. It's three days of educational workshops like self-breast exams, self-defense, MC maintenance and line dancing. It's parties around the pool and rides through the country side. It's about women sharing their love of motorcycling in a supportive environment. It's cool!! All proceeds from the rally go to the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Society.
The phone number for information is 410-468-3388 or write MAWMR P.O. Box 785 Crownsville, Md. 21032-0785. I don't have the final number in attendance last year, but over 250 women pre-registered. As usual, it was a totally awesome weekend.
